UPDATE FROM DANCE FUN CRUISE DIRECTOR

     We're about 6 months out from our CruiseFest Swing Dance Cruise and 3 months till Final Payment is due.

     While we can continue to book passage all the way up to September, on May 21st our remaining block of cabins reverts back to Carnival. After that point we can still book passages but we can not guarantee what Carnival will do with the pricing.

     Last year Carnival was in trouble (the economy, etc.) and the price dropped a bit and we passed on that price reduction to those that had already booked. But, according to Carnival they are in good shape as far as sales for this year’s cruise.

     With that in mind, odds are there will be a slight increase in cost after May 21^st!

     Check out the brand new Double Diva WCS Performance Team thatMichele Adams and I are starting – We have our first practice TONIGHT, Monday, May 3rd at 9:00 pm. Want to find out what’s it all about? Want to learn a cool dance routine and perform it? Want to improve your dancing and your performance/competition skills? Want to have fun and meet some awesome people? Come down to the BeaHive Dance Studio inGarden Grove tonight and get in on the ground floor! BOXING VS. DANCING
   Many of you know that I have been taking boxing lessons for the
past couple of months and I can not accurately describe the deep sense
of satisfaction it is to learn a technique that allows you to hit
something with all your might and have it be ok – no repercussions!
That’s a great thing. Granted all I’ve hit so far is are the hand pads
that my trainer wears and the big, heavy bag, I haven’t even graduated
to the speed bag yet. But still, very intense, very satisfying and I
try not to miss a single week.

    Incidentally, my trainer, Jose Moreno (310-570-5774), who works
out of Muscle Under Gym in West Hollywood, is VERY good and
knowledgeable, a former pro fighter himself so he really knows what
he’s talking about. And although I’m not a teacher of boxing, I am a
teacher of dance and can recognize when someone a) knows what they are
talking about and b) has laid out a logical progression to follow in
the lessons – that’s so important. And he doesn’t do just boxing, he
does all over physical conditioning, the works. Bottom line I
definitely recommend if you are interested in one-on-one person
trainer for fitness, weight loss, boxing, physical conditioning,
whatever, he’s “the man.”

    So back to my story. I was working out with him yesterday morning
and he was showing me a new technique to prepare me for sparring
(which I may never actually graduate to, to tell you the truth) - Step
to the side, ducking as you step and throwing a punch at the same
time. Something about it in my twisted dancer’s mind made me think of
some kind of weird line dance and I said,”You know, Jose, if we were
dancing this movement it would look like this,” and proceeded to demo
– The step, duck with an added head roll, followed by a shoulder pop
at the top and a foot tap on the other leg. He just looked at me with
a blank stare so I tried again, this time adding a body roll at the end
as well. There I was, bobbing and weaving and rolling like Funkmeister
Trish, getting absolutely no reaction from my trainer. I guess some
things just don’t translate, LOL.

6-WEEK NIGHTCLUB GROUP PERFORMS FOR BALLROOM BY THE BAY DANCE
   I journeyed out to Santa Monica on Wednesday night to teach for
Jane and her weekly Ballroom By The Bay Dance. I thought it would be a
great opportunity to bring my little 6-Week Performance Group with me
so they could do their Nightclub routine one more time. The Nightclub
workshop I taught went over really well, the dance was great with lots
of ballroom and contemporary music by DJ James Woo and the performance

   I still have room for one couple or one follower for my 6-Week

COSTCO VS. TRISH: COSTCO WINS
   This has absolutely nothing to do with dancing I’m still pondering
how it happens. You go into Costco for one or two items and come out
later with a grocery cart full of stuff and a receipt for $200+
dollars – how does that happen? I don’t quite understand it. Granted,
all good stuff, all good prices but still... Is the law or something?
You can’t leave the store unless you spend X amount of dollars?

WHERE DANCECHATTER WILL BE THIS WEEKEND
   David is coming up tonight and we will head over the hill to
Burbank Moose Lodge to have dinner there (there is a dinner served
every 2nd and 4th Friday), hang out with some of the Moose students
and dance to the music of The Strikers. The Strikers is a musical duo
that has played at the Burbank Moose Lodge every other Friday night
since time began. They are very kitchy, sometimes corny but lots of
fun, definitely worth seeing at least once and the music is pretty
danceable. Many of you know Janet who runs registrations for my
Tuesday night classes, give her a call or e-mail if you want her to
save you a seat with our group ( janeteggleston@gmail.com,
626-627-6799).

    Saturday night I am headed to the Century Plaza Hotel in Century
City for a big fundraiser called Dancing With Our Stars. This is an
annual event sponsored by Santa Clarita Magazine, I believe, where
they recruit professional teachers from the area to donate their time
to teach an amateur student a dance routine. Then they all perform it
at this gala event, complete with cocktail hour, sit down dinner, etc.
Your’s truly has been asked to judge the event, in fact I have been
appointed most high mucky-muck Chief Judge – probably because I
volunteered some suggestions as to how score/run the judging side of
the contest (that will teach me, LOL). Each amateur student is dancing
for a different charity and has been raising funds for their
particular charity all through out this process, and since there are
20 couples scheduled to compete it’s all for a great cause – what fun!
Anyway, David will be with me, we get to dress up and hobnob (hob
knob?), and act very important, LOL. It will be fun, I’m looking

4TH SATURDAY DANCES THIS WEEKEND
   I understand that although Rhonda Diamond is still out of
commission this week but her 4th Saturday Dance is STILL scheduled for
this Saturday in Lomita at the Regency Ballroom/South Bay Dance
Center. Matt V will be helming the dance with assistance from others
so all should run smoothly in Rhonda’s absence (although I know she

   The DanceChatter Group going on the CruiseFest Swing Dance Cruise
is growing (Sept 26-Oct 3 to Caribbean)! Time to sign up NOW. You

Wrap-Up: The Day After

I want to thank everyone who came out for the very first 7th Tuesday Dance at the Burbank Moose Lodge last night, Tuesday, February 16th. We had a great time!

We started out the night with a Beginning West Coast Swing Workshop which was free to "true newbies," ie, those who had never taken a WCS class before. The workshop was filled with newcomers and most of those folks took the plunge and signed up for the Beginning WCS 6-week series that starts next week, February 23rd. We are converting... uh, I mean, introducing new people to West Coast Swing, that's what it's all about!!

The Intermediate West Coast Swing Workshop was really fun, too. We had a lot of familiar faces and existing DanceChatter students, but also new-to-me dancers in that group, as well (many of who signed up for the Beyond Basics WCS 6-week series that starts on February 23rd). We had a full floor, a fun and challenging pattern and by the end of the workshop everyone was all warmed up for social dancing. A particular highlight for me was seeing all those dancers actually using the class material they just learned out there on the social dance floor with success - way to go!

DJDK David Koppelman played the best WCS, Hustle, Country 2-Step, Nightclub and Cha Cha music you could possibly hope for, and kept right on playing until there were no more dancers on the floor. His ability to mix the song and dance styles and read the crowd to keep the energy going, keeping everyone happy, is truly a gift. 

Everyone enjoyed the refreshments - we offered a healthy mix of veggies and fruit, and for a touch of decadence, cookies and those delicious "brownie bites".... Mmmmm! Next time though, you all have to promise me that you'll eat ALL the brownies before you leave - it's dangerous for me to take them home!

The Best Dancer Award goes to Chester who’s been a DanceChatter student for almost a year. Before the dance I gave Chester, who doesn’t get out dancing very much, a mission: "While at the dance you need to ask 5 women you don't know to dance (in addition to the women you already know)" This was a real challenge for Chester but by golly if he didn't do it, I could not be more proud of him, way to go Chester!

Special thanks to my volunteers who helped me set up, organize put out the food, work the registration desk and break it all down at the end: Janet, Alice, Gordon, Steve, Dennis, Denise, and Chip. I could not have done it without you. However, I have to give a little extra special shout-out to Alice for her mad skills in working the room - ie, talking to all those new folks, making sure everyone was comfortable and having a good time, and most importantly, getting out there and dancing with everyone! 

Also, special thanks to dance promoter Rhonda Diamond for not only sharing the dance info with her extensive e-mail list but who also made a cameo at the dance as well! Thank you Rhonda, it was a pleasure to have you and Paul in the house! And, folks - make sure you attend Rhonda and DJDK David Koppelman's 4th Saturday dance in Lomita on February 27th, it will be a blast! (www.diamondswing.com). 

I'd also like to thank James Woo from Dance Buddies and USA Dance for his support in publicizing the dance, for taking the time to come and hang out with us. James, we had a wild WCS, it was fun, thank you for joining us!

Thanks also to my Hustle partner in crime, Michele Adams, who although not able to attend (she's waaaaaayy down in Orange County), took the time to support the dance via her e-mail list. Quick aside, Michele and I have a Double Diva Hustle Workshop coming up on Saturday, March 6th at the Golden Sails Hotel in Long Beach (www.dancechatter.com). And, did you know? Michele's and my Double Diva Hustle Team will be making its debut performance at the upcoming Los Angeles Premiere Dance Classic (April 9-11th, www.lapdclassic.com). 

And, although I know he usually doesn't like me to acknowledge him, I must also say thank you to Bailey, the administrator at the Burbank Moose Lodge. He always makes it so easy for me to teach and work there, making sure the lights are right, the temperature is correct, the sound is working, etc. His attention to detail really makes a difference. Also thanks to Bailey, the dance floor is FANTASTIC (as was commented on by many people). 

As for me, I had a blast teaching both workshops last night (give me a mic and I'm happy, LOL), I loved meeting all those new people and seeing so many familiar faces as well, and I did my best to dance with as many of you as possible (I haven't lead so much in one night in a while!). 

See you all next week, Tuesday, February 23rd when we resume the regular Tuesday night classes (7:00 pm Beginning WCS, 8:00 pm Beyond Basics WCS, 9:00 pm Beginning Nightclub) with a new 6-week series, and mark down Tuesday, April 6th as the date for our next 7th Tuesday Dance Party!

     This Critique Session is your chance to get instant feedback on your dancing, something that usually only private lessons can provide. Get critiqued in a supportive group environment, learn on-the-spot tips and techniques to take your dancing up a notch, and increase your dance knowledge as you watch other critiques. Attendees must know all WCS basics and be Intermediate or above (or obtain instructor’s approval).

   Advance Registration HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

     Our last Critique Session SOLD OUT! Participants with advance registration will have priority. Walk-In’s will not be guaranteed a critique (but we’ll try to fit you in). Attendees not critiqued will receive a 50% refund at the end of class.

     The City of West Hollywood, in association with the West Hollywood Sherriff's Department, hosts an annual Food and Toy drive for families in the West Hollywood, Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

     Each year the program provides holiday dinners, toys and now even clothing for families-in-need. This is my 9th year participating in this program, I support it because it helps people locally, people in my neighborhood, people in your neighborhood. Help me to help others!
